Data Killers Achieves WBENC Certification

As a single mom, Elizabeth Wilmot founded Turtle Wings and Data Killers, an electronics recycling and data destruction company in 2005. Ms. Wilmot, a former senior executive at CitiGroup, has experienced the challenges of building a small business from her kitchen table to become a successful company serving customers nationwide.

Data Killers thought it was important to get certified because businesses that claim woman owned status often have 51 percent woman ownership, however, the daily operations of the company are managed and run by a man. WBENC certification ensures that all certified businesses are indeed woman operated businesses.

WBENC is one of the largest certifiers of businesses owned, controlled, and operated by women in the United States. All businesses certified by WBENC must pass strict requirements, including submission of formal documentation and an on-site review of all operations by one of WBENC’s regional partner organizations.

“We have seen several companies pretend to be woman owned and operated in order to get priority for contracts. One must question the ethics of any company that lies about its qualifications and status as that obviously taints every aspect of the entire company. In the recycling and data destruction business, we feel that integrity is of paramount importance. Values start at the top and then affect the entire operations of the company,” said Jairus Wright, Marketing Manager.
