Data Killers saves 177 barrels of fuel

“Turtle Wings / Data Killers is always looking for new ways to recycle the materials that come into our facilities.   Though we have a strict no e-waste landfill policy, there are always some packaging items that are not easily or feasibly recycled,” said Elizabeth Wilmot, President of Turtle Wings / Data Killers. “In keeping with our green policy, we send some items, like shredded tapes, to waste to energy facilities. as that is the most “green” solution which is currently available.”

“In 2012, we found several new ways to recycle some of the materials coming into our facility so we were able to reduce the amount of materials that we sent to be converted to energy as compared to 2011,” said Dejuan Hawkins, Operations Manager.  “In 2011, we sent 362,920 pounds of non-hazardous waste material to waste-to-energy facilities in the greater DC are which produced 145 MWh of energy – enough to power 13 homes for an entire year thus saving 258 barrels of fuel.  In 2012, through our innovative ways, we sent 213,880 pounds of non-hazardous waste material to waste-to-energy facilities in the greater DC area which produced 100 MWh of energy – enough to power 9 homes for an entire year thus saving 177 barrels of fuel.   We will continue to search for new and innovative ways to recycle every scrap that comes into our facilities but in the meantime, we are delighted to be producing a green source of energy and saving precious fossil fuels.”
