Turtle Wings, an electronics recycler, produced enough energy in 2011 to power 13 homes by diverting materials away from landfills. Since the company’s inception, Turtle Wings has adopted a “no landfill” policy for e-waste. The Maryland-based electronics recycler has found ways to reuse or recycle almost everything that comes into the warehouse. However, there is always some discarded material that cannot be viably recycled. Typically this happens with packaging materials because plastic recycling techniques are not as sophisticated and economically feasible as other recycling methods. One solution to dealing with this type of waste while making sure nothing ends up in a landfill is utilizing Energy-from-Waste technology, where electricity is generated from the incineration of otherwise unusable materials.
Turtle Wings has been recognized for its environmentally sound initiatives in taking advantage of Energy-from-Waste technology. In 2011, Turtle Wings provided 263,920 pounds of waste materials for combustion which in turn saved over 258 barrels of fuel oil. This generated 145 MWh of energy. To put these numbers into perspective, that is enough energy to power 13 homes for an entire year!
Turtle Wings’ logistics manager Dejuan Hawkins stated, “We come across things that just can’t be recycled in a traditional sense, but we always have a way deal with it responsibly. It’s really important to us that nothing ends up in landfills. If we can do it in a way that also provides clean energy, all the better.” Turtle Wings’ newest achievement represents the company’s ongoing commitment towards providing eco-friendly solutions that uphold the “no landfill” policy.
Turtle Wings was founded in 2005 at a kitchen table with nothing more than a staff of two. It has evolved into a nationwide company, providing on-site data destruction services under the Data Killers trade name.
Turtle Wings & Data Killers are headquartered in Maryland on the Washington DC border with satellite offices across the U.S. The company is certified by ISO; WBENC; DLIS; and HUBZone and holds two GSA contracts for environmental services and data destruction.
